Section I

1.1 WHEREAS, members of the UO Board of Trustees and the University community share the common goal of improving the UO’s standing as one of the premier public research universities in the country; and

1.2 WHEREAS, the University community and the UO Board of Trustees are in the early stages of building a relationship with each other; and

1.3 WHEREAS, relationships grow stronger when people and groups get to know each other better, learn about each others’ needs, interests, and activities, and share information of vital interest to each other; and

1.4 WHEREAS, at the UO Board of Trustees’ September meeting there was no place on the agenda for the University Senate and the ASUO to report on their activities and no advance distribution of materials and resolutions dealing with the presidential search process and several significant changes to the student conduct code; and

1.5 WHEREAS, the University Senate endeavors to strengthen its own connections with the University community in several ways, including by opening its general and committee meetings to all who wish to attend and by requiring 21 days’ notice of motions and five days’ advance posting of the final text of all motions coming before the body;

Section II

2.1 BE IT HEREBY MOVED that the University Senate extends a formal invitation to members of the UO Board of Trustees to attend and speak at our general meetings; and

2.2 BE IT FURTHER MOVED that the University Senate urges the UO Board of Trustees to resume the practice of reserving time on their general meeting agendas for reports from the elected representatives of the University Senate and the ASUO; and

2.3 BE IT FURTHER MOVED that the University Senate encourages the leaders of the UO Board of Trustees to meet informally with the leaders of the University Senate and the leaders of the organizations representing the main University Senate constituencies, such as the ASUO, Officers of Administration Council (OAC), United Academics (UA), Service Employees International Union (SEIU), and the Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation (GTFF), in order to build relationships and increase understanding; and

2.4 BE IT FURTHER MOVED that the University Senate urges the UO Board of Trustees to go beyond the requirements of Oregon’s Public Meetings Law and make readily available to trustees, the University community, and the public at least seven (7) days before any regular Board or Board committee meeting copies of all known and pertinent materials and resolutions that will be considered or presented at those meetings; and

2.5 BE IT FINALLY MOVED that the President of the University Senate is directed to communicate this resolution and our hopes for a productive relationship to the Chair and Vice-Chair of the UO Board of Trustees.
