Section I
1.1 WHEREAS the University of Oregon’s mission is to be “a comprehensive public research university committed to exceptional teaching, discovery, and service”;[1]
1.2 AND WHEREAS the University values “our diversity and seek[s] to foster equity and inclusion in a welcoming, safe, and respectful community”;[2]
1.3 AND WHEREAS the University of Oregon has erected many monuments and markers to honor Oregon’s pioneer history, the University has done very little to acknowledge or recognize its own history of racial hierarchy and segregation;
1.4 AND WHEREAS forgetting, disregarding, and hiding these histories are contrary to the University’s efforts to create inclusive learning environments that value the history and contributions of individuals regardless of race, gender, culture, sexual orientation or ability;

2.1 BE IT THEREFORE MOVED that the University of Oregon Senate honors its values of serving a diverse campus community;
2.2 AND BE IT FURTHER MOVED that the University of Oregon Senate requests that the administration and the Senate jointly form an ad hoc committee to research as well as oversee the creation of new historical markers that recognize the institution's troubled past of segregation and exclusion as well as the history and achievements of people of color on campus (see Appendices B & C). The committee shall consist of 9 members: three students from the Alliance of Graduate Students for Diversity and the Black Student Union; three individuals selected by the Senate President; three individuals selected by the administration.
2.3 The ad hoc committee will present a report to the Senate and the administration regarding its recommendations no later than the first Senate meeting of winter quarter 2016.
