Motion

Section I

1.1 WHEREAS, on October 10, 2015, the Oregon Interinstitutional Faculty Senate (IFS) unanimously passed the resolution to address violence in our schools, which is presented under Section 2 below; and

1.2 WHEREAS the IFS asks the University Senate of each of its member institutions to consider and approve the aforesaid resolution at its first meeting after October 10th;

Section 2

2.1 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Oregon Senate offers its deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the survivors of the Umpqua Community College (UCC) shooting, and to all those whose lives have been directly affected by this tragedy; and

2.2 BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Oregon Senate agrees to work with the IFS to address the threat of violence in our schools through means appropriate to our campus; and

2.3 BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Oregon Senate supports the efforts of IFS to collaborate with the Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC) to convene a statewide conversation regarding violence in our schools, including gun violence, which will lead to meaningful action.
