Motion

1.1 WHEREAS, the UO Senate passed legislation establishing the membership structure for each of the following Senate Committees (Graduate Council, Undergraduate Council, Committee on Courses, and the Core Education Committee); and

1.2 WHEREAS, the UO Senate President, Vice President, and Chairs of these academic senate committees would like to support communication and collaboration between these aforementioned committees and the UO Senate, in furtherance of shared governance; and


1.3 WHEREAS, the charge(s) for each of these Senate Committees (e.g., Graduate Council, Undergraduate Council, Committee on Courses, and the Core Education Committee) do not designate a voting seat for a current member of the Senate;

Section II
2.1 BE IT HEREBY MOVED that the UO Senate authorizes the incoming Senate President, in consultation with the outgoing Senate President and Senate Executive Committee, to: (a) solicit self-nominations from current UO senators, and (b) appoint or cause to be appointed, one senator to each of these four Senate committees to serve for a two-year term as a full, voting committee member. Senators eligible for appointment consist of members of the statutory faculty (TTF and Career).


2.2 BE IT FURTHER MOVED that if the selected individual is no longer serving in the Senate, for any reason, senate leadership will follow the procedures above in 2.1 to appoint a replacement from among current Senators.

Appendix: List of Academic Committees Relevant in this Policy

1. Committee on Courses: Is responsible for the University's curriculum. Membership consists of 7 teaching faculty (no two from the same department, nor more than two from the same school/college, with the exception of the College of Arts and Sciences (no more than two from any CAS division) (2 students)

2. Core Education Council: Current membership includes 6 elected faculty members: 3 CAS (1 each from Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences), 3 professional schools (no two from the same college or school); and 4 faculty members appointed at-large by the Committee on Committees from CAS faculty. At least 2 at-large members shall be appointed each year from areas on the agenda for that year. For instance, if the BA/BS requirement is on the agenda, 2 at-large members shall be appointed from math and language. [Note: No two faculty members – elected and appointed – can be from the same department or professional school.]

3. Graduate Council: Membership currently consists of 14 voting members. Of 12 statutory (i.e., teaching) faculty, 6 come from CAS (i.e., Humanities (2), Social Sciences (2), and Natural Sciences (2)), and no two members may come from same CAS department. The remaining 6 members consist of 1 from each professional school/college (i.e., College of Design, Education, Business; Schools of Journalism & Communication, and Music & Dance). Two students also serve as members.


4. Undergraduate Council: Is responsible for reviewing, evaluating and enhancing the quality of the University’s undergraduate academic programs. Members consist of 1 faculty member from each unit: Design, Business, Education, SOJC, SOMD, Honors College, CAS Humanities, CAS Natural Sciences, CAS Social Sciences; and 2 CAS At-Large Faculty. The remaining 4 members are students.
