Motion

Section I

1.1 WHEREAS the protection and ethical treatment of human research subjects/participants is central to the research mission of the University and public trust in the institution; and

1.2 WHEREAS the University does not otherwise have an institutional policy that establishes requirements for non-federally funded research with human subjects/participants;

1.3 WHEREAS the University currently provides a Federal Wide Assurance to the Office for Human Research Protection Programs that commits the University to comply with federal regulations for the protection of human subjects/participants in research; and

1.4 WHEREAS the University currently extends these federal regulations to all research conducted at or on behalf of the University, including research that is not federally funded; and

1.5 WHEREAS recent federal rule making will soon change the Federal Wide Assurance system, eliminating the University’s ability to extend these federal regulations to non-federally funded research; and

Section II

2.1 THEREFORE BE IT MOVED that the University Senate approves the Human Research Protection Program Policy delineated in the Related Documents for immediate implementation.
