Motion

Section I

1.1 WHEREAS the University of Oregon is a public university with a diverse group of language and literature departments, a department of global studies, and geographic area studies programs that are nationally and internationally recognized for their teaching and research;

1.2 WHEREAS a faculty-led steering committee developed a full and thoughtful proposal (available in Related Documents section) for a new School of Global Studies and Languages in the College of Arts and Sciences from spring 2020 to October 31, 2020;

1.3 WHEREAS the CAS dean and provost worked with the department leadership to develop the April 2021 Proposal/MOU for a new School (available in Related Documents section) during winter term 2021 through conversations, listening sessions and written responses to faculty concerns and requests;

1.4 WHEREAS the majority of faculty in the four departments who will be part of the new School have endorsed the proposal – two departments endorsed it unanimously and the other two had clear majorities;

Section II

2.1 THEREFORE BE IT MOVED that the University Senate endorses a resolution supporting the creation of a new School of Global Studies and Languages in the College of Arts and Sciences per recommendations outlined in the April 2021 Proposal/MOU listed under Related Documents.
