Changes to the Criteria for the awarding of Latin Honors

Motion

Section I

1.1  WHEREAS the current criteria for awarding Latin Honors is inconsistent, and does not comply with the best practices of University of Oregon’s peer institution in the Big Ten; and

1.2  WHEREAS the target for achieving Latin Honors moves year to year, and is not completely transparent to students, as it is based on the 5-year rolling average of graduating students cumulative GPA; and

1.3  WHEREAS using the current percentage-based criteria, students need to achieve a grade point average above 4.0 for Summa Cum Laude;

Section II

2.1  THEREFORE BE IT MOVED that the University Senate moves to a Latin Honors criteria based on established GPA bands, rather  than on percentages; and

2.2  BE IT FURTHER MOVED that the following set grade point average bands be established to achieve Latin Honors:

Summa Cum Laude = 3.95 and above

Magna Cum Laude = 3.85  3.94

Cum Laude = 3.75  3.84
