Academic Modification Advisory Committee

Our Charge and Responsibilities

The AMAC will provide meaningful advice and input to the University President specifically related to significant academic changes.

The AMAC agrees to strict confidentiality as necessary to facilitate its role in providing meaningful advice to administrators. All conversations, documents shared and specific details discussed in a confidential setting shall remain confidential without unanimous agreement from the committee membership including ex-officio administrative members.

The AMAC shall provide a written report to the University Senate with their input before significant academic changes are executed. The report shall detail the process the Committee used to solicit information and provide feedback to appropriate administrators but will not include confidential information without unanimous agreement (see Section 2.2). The AMAC report shall include details of the feedback received from various stakeholders and the University Community and the public.

The AMAC shall establish a plan for soliciting feedback from specific stakeholders, the University or Oregon Community, and the public as directed in Section 4.4 of the Procedures for collaborative input for significant academic changes at the University of Oregon.

The AMAC shall consider the following guidelines when giving their feedback to a potential significant academic change:

  • Academic quality of a program
  • Significance of the program within the history of the University of Oregon and higher education in the United States
  • Contribution of the program to the University's mission, curriculum, research and service
  • A program's present and projected student enrollment and societal need of the program
  • The program's contribution to other units and interdisciplinary faculty
  • The program's effect on diversity of the University, including historically underrepresented faculty, staff, and students
  • The relative costs and resources of the program, considered in relation to the foregoing factors

Each final AMAC report shall evaluate the administration's plan for a significant academic change to ensure that the plan:

  • Includes provisions for students to complete their degree within a reasonable teach-out period or receive equivalent alternatives
  • Is compliant with existing university policies and procedures and collective bargaining agreements that provide reassignment or other protections for affected faculty and staff
  • Preserves the preservation of essential curricular functions and academic records
  • Mitigates harm to related programs and units
